Intro: Lutein is a naturally occurring pigment found in plants. When ingested by humans, it concentrates in a section of the eye called the macula, which is a small area in the center of the retina. Lutein acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against the damaging effects of free radicals. Lutein is not made in the body and must be obtained from food or vitamin supplements. Lutein is found in large amounts in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach.
